Big Changes to Business Meals Deduction
Recent tax law made a little-talked about but large impact change effective 1/1/2026: employer expenses related to providing meals for the convenience of the employer or meals in company cafeterias are no longer deductible in any amount, unless they are sold in “bona-fide” sale. This list of non-deductible meals includes meals provided to employees on business premises including cafeteria lunches, catered meeting meals, and incentivized meals for employees on-site for operational reasons such as working late. Snacks, coffee, and overtime meals are also no longer deductible for tax purposes. There are a few exceptions for fishing vessel meals.

Business lunch meals and holiday parties for employees are still 50% deductible, so small businesses need to be careful with their recordkeeping (a good bookkeeper is very valuable!)
