Fertility Treatments May Become A New Kind of Employee Benefit

The Departments of the Treasury, Labor, and Health and Human Services have issued proposed regulations that would establish fertility benefits as a new category of tax-advantaged employee benefit. This change would allow employers to offer coverage for fertility treatments as a stand-alone benefit, separate from health insurance and exempt from certain ACA requirements.

To qualify, such benefits must be limited to diagnosing, mitigating, or treating infertility and related conditions. The proposal establishes a lifetime benefit limit of $120,000 per participant, which would be indexed for medical inflation for plan years beginning after 12/31/27.

The Pope and Artificial Intelligence

Pope Leo XIV (the first American pope) issued a special papal letter that is focused on preserving human dignity in the face of AI. The pope signed the letter on May 15 but released it on May 25 in a ceremony that followed a panel including one of the co-founders of Anthropic, the creator of Claude.ai. Last year, shortly after he was elected, the Pope said that the Church could offer unique advice regarding developments in the field of artificial intelligence that pose new challenges for the defense of human dignity, justice and labor. In the letter, he posits that technology takes on the character of those who design, fund and control it; and that AI may create a new form of inequality. I cannot possibly accurately summarize the 245-paragraph letter here; I suggest you read it for yourself.
