Recent Court Case Can Result in Tax Refunds
A recent court case allows that penalties and interest incurred from 1/20/2020 – 7/10/2023 during the Covid federally declared disaster may be eligible for refund. To claim the refund, you would file form 843 with an original (wet) signature by July 10, 2026. There are no extensions, so if you paid significant interest or penalties during that period, contact your tax preparer regarding filing the form as soon as possible. (Read more about Kwong here).
Millionaires Taxes
Several states have instituted so-called “millionaire’s taxes” (often structured as a surtax or additional bracket that applies once income exceeds a high threshold). Examples include Massachusetts’ 4% surtax on taxable income over $1 million; New York’s higher-rate brackets for high earners; New Jersey’s additional top-rate bracket(s); California’s additional mental health services tax on certain income over $1 million ; Maine’s new millionaire’s tax effective 1/1/2026 and Washington’s millionaire’s tax. Because thresholds, definitions of taxable income, and phase-ins can change, check the official state guidance and coordinate with your tax preparer before relying on the rules.
Taxes and financial planning are complex, but you don’t have to navigate them alone. A financial advisor can help you stay informed about tax law changes, optimize your savings and investments, and avoid costly mistakes. If you need tailored guidance, our team is here to help. Talk to an advisor or call (603) 589-8010 to integrate tax planning into your comprehensive financial strategy.
